The MasterPiece Arms MPA30T Defender is a semi-automatic 9mm pistol built on the MAC platform, with a top-mounted cocking handle, a machined aluminum lower receiver, adjustable front and rear sights, and a 1/2x28 threaded muzzle. It ships with one 30-round magazine and a gun case, and MasterPiece Arms backs it with a lifetime guarantee.

It looks like a submachine gun and it is not one. This is a closed-bolt, blowback, semi-automatic pistol: one round per trigger pull, the same as any other handgun on the shelf.

What you get

  • Top cocking handle. The traditional MAC and Cobray layout, with the handle riding in a slot along the top of the receiver.
  • Machined aluminum lower receiver. Lighter and better shaped than the stamped steel frames on the old guns, with a QD flush cup built in for a single point sling.
  • Short Picatinny rail under the front of the receiver for a light or a laser.
  • Adjustable front and rear sights. Both ends adjustable, which the originals never offered.
  • Quick magazine release at the heel of the grip, easy to hit without breaking your firing grip.
  • 1/2x28 threaded muzzle with a knurled thread protector fitted. Standard 9mm thread pitch for muzzle devices or a suppressor.
  • Lever safety forward of the trigger, marked on the receiver.
  • One 30-round polymer magazine and a hard case in the box.
  • Built in Comer, Georgia by MasterPiece Arms, with a lifetime guarantee.

Top cocker, not a side cocker. MasterPiece Arms builds this pistol both ways and the two are not the same gun. The MPA30SST moves the handle to the left side and adds a scope mount. This is the MPA30T: handle on top, traditional layout, and the handle travels with the bolt as you fire. Keep your support hand clear of the top of the receiver. It is not a flaw, it is how the design has always worked, and it is the first thing we will show you across the counter.

Who this is for

People who have always wanted the MAC look and have no interest in spending five figures and waiting on a registered transferable. It is a range gun and a conversation piece, heavy in the hand in a way that photographs do not convey. It is also genuinely well made. MasterPiece Arms is better known for precision bolt-action rifles and competition chassis systems, and the Defender line is machined to the same standards.

Things worth knowing before you buy

We would rather tell you now than have you find out at the range.

  • Mounting an optic is not a drop-on job. The cocking handle occupies the top of the receiver, which is where a rail would normally sit. Ask us before you buy glass for this pistol.
  • The magazine loads stiff. Most people cannot get a 30-round magazine full by hand. A magazine loader is a worthwhile add-on and we can point you at one.
  • The cocking handle can be tight out of the box and loosens with use.
  • The sights are small. Adjustable at both ends, but still a MAC-pattern sight picture.
  • Spare magazines are worth buying early. These have historically run STEN pattern magazines, and the polymer ones were often made by TAPCO, which is no longer in business. Ask us what we can source.

None of that is a dealbreaker. All of it is better known up front.

Buy the pistol here and we can mark it here, without shipping it anywhere. We confirm the artwork, size, and placement with you before anything is cut, because engraving does not come back off.

Both units are on the shelf at 518 W Goldfield Ave, Yerington, Nevada. Buy in person and there is no transfer needed: Dark Horse Guns & Ammo is the federally licensed dealer, so you fill out the paperwork at our counter and walk out with it, subject to the standard background check. Bring valid ID.
