The Springfield Armory SA-35 4 inch, model HP9204, is the shorter-barreled version of Springfield's modern Browning Hi-Power. Forged carbon steel frame and slide in a matte blue finish, checkered walnut grips, a 4-inch cold hammer forged barrel, and a factory tuned trigger with the magazine disconnect deleted. Built in the United States.

Here is what matters about this model: Springfield shortened the slide and barrel and left everything else alone. Capacity is still 15+1. The frame, grip, and height are unchanged. You are trimming length off the muzzle end, which is the end that does not print when you carry.

What Springfield changed from the original

• No magazine disconnect. The original Hi-Power would not fire without a magazine seated, and the linkage sat right in the trigger path. Removing it is the single biggest improvement to how this pistol feels.
• Recontoured hammer to stop the hammer bite the originals were known for.
• Extended thumb safety, larger and easier to reach, without looking like an add-on.
• White dot front and serrated Tactical Rack rear sights, dovetailed into the slide.
• Improved feed ramp reworked to run modern hollow point ammunition.
• 15-round magazine, up from the original 13, flush fitting.
• Beveled magwell machined into the frame.

Things worth knowing

• One magazine in the box. The SA-35 takes standard Hi-Power pattern magazines and Mec-Gar makes them in 13 and 15 round versions. Pick up spares.
• Right-hand controls. Safety and magazine release are not ambidextrous, same as the original. Left-handed shooters should handle one first.
• No optic cut, no accessory rail. Springfield left this a wood and steel pistol on purpose.
• Single action. Carried loaded it rides cocked and locked, hammer back with the safety on, the same as a 1911. Sound method, but it wants a proper holster and a shooter who knows the manual of arms.

Engraving
