Selenium is an essential trace mineral involved in thyroid hormone metabolism and antioxidant enzyme function. Requirements are very small, around 55 micrograms a day for adults, and the gap between an adequate intake and an excessive one is narrower than with most minerals, so measure carefully and do not stack multiple selenium sources.
