The Rock Island Armory M1911 A2 TAC Ultra FS HC AOS in 9mm, SKU 57172AOS, is a full-size double-stack 1911 built from 4140 ordnance steel with a factory optics cut. It holds 16 rounds in the magazine plus one chambered, runs a 5.05-inch button-rifled barrel, and comes ready for a red dot out of the box.

Chambered in 9mm and weighing two and a half pounds, this pistol has almost no recoil to speak of. All that steel soaks it up. Put a dot on it and you have a 1911 you can genuinely train with in volume without beating yourself up or your wallet.

What the AOS cut gets you

AOS is the Agency Optic System. Instead of a slide milled for one specific red dot, this one has a standardized cut that takes interchangeable adapter plates. Plates exist for RMR, RMSc and Shield, Delta Point Pro, 509T, Acro, and Holosun K series footprints, so you are not married to whichever optic you buy first. The plate also carries the rear sight, which means pulling the optic and dropping in a cover plate puts you back on irons with no gunsmithing.

RIA USA has told customers that the AOS plate for a Springfield Prodigy is the correct plate, and pointed at C&H Precision as a source. Bring your optic to the counter and we will work out which plate you need before you spend money on the wrong one.

About the sights

Front and rear are Glock-pattern dovetails, which is a change from the non-AOS TAC Ultra and its LPA adjustable rear. The trade is worth understanding. You give up the factory adjustable target rear sight, and you gain the most widely supported sight dovetail in the world. Every major sight maker builds Glock-pattern sets, including suppressor-height, which is exactly what you need if you want irons visible under a red dot.

Fair warning: most RMR-footprint optics sit tall enough on an AOS plate that they will not co-witness with standard-height irons. If a backup sight picture matters to you, budget for suppressor-height sights at the same time.

Things worth knowing

  • The grip is thick. This is a double-stack 1911 and it feels like one. If you have small hands, handle it first. This is the most common reason someone passes, and we would rather you find out at our counter than after.
  • Optics ready is not optics included. Plan on a plate plus a red dot, and possibly suppressor-height sights.
  • Fit and finish are functional. These are built to a price and they look like working guns. Owners consistently report they run.
  • Series 70 pattern. No firing pin block, which is normal for 1911s including plenty of premium ones. Worth pairing with a holster that fully covers the trigger guard.
  • Budget for magazines. Double-stack 1911 magazines cost more and are stocked less widely than common polymer pistol magazines, and these can be magazine-sensitive. Stick with factory pattern and ask us what we can source.
