The Tippmann Ordnance Pirate Pistol, model DTSR-1, is a tube-fed, pump-action handgun chambered in .380 ACP. Solid steel construction, a clamshell receiver, custom walnut furniture, a 10-inch threaded barrel, and an external hammer you cock by working the wooden forend. It is built by hand in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in limited runs, and it arrives in a custom wooden treasure chest.

The story behind it

Dennis Tippmann Sr. drew this pistol up in 2006, shortly after retiring from the paintball industry. The design was finished. It never went into production, and the drawings sat in a drawer for close to twenty years. Brad Tippmann pulled the project back out and put it into production for the modern market, which makes this a design that waited two decades for someone to finish the job.

If you know the Tippmann name from hand-cranked Gatling guns, this is the same shop and the same instinct: build the mechanically interesting thing, and build it out of steel.

How the action works

Sliding the walnut forend rearward drives a mechanical toggle that cocks the external hammer and cycles a round from the tube magazine. It is a manual repeating action, the same basic idea as a pump shotgun, in a pistol chambered for a pistol cartridge. That combination is close to nonexistent in current production.

A 10-inch barrel is a long run for a .380, which means noticeably more velocity than the same cartridge out of a pocket pistol. The 1/2x28 muzzle threads take a suppressor once you have been through the ATF process, and a quiet .380 out of a barrel that length is a genuinely pleasant thing to shoot.

The treasure chest

Not a marketing flourish added to a cardboard box. The pistol ships in a purpose-built wooden chest with leather strapping, brass studs, a latch, and printed artwork inside the lid. Very few production firearms come in presentation packaging built for them specifically. If this ends up on a shelf in your office rather than in a safe, nobody will blame you.

Things worth knowing before you order

• Tippmann quotes roughly a 90 day build time from paid order to shipment on direct orders. These are made in limited runs by hand, not pulled off a shelf.
• Tippmann lists all sales as final on this model. Ask us and we will confirm exactly where you stand before you commit a dollar.
• This is a collector and range piece, not a carry gun. Three and a half pounds, ten inches of barrel, and a pump action. Nobody is concealing this, and it is not trying to be concealed.
• Retailers list the capacity inconsistently. Tippmann's own spec sheet says 7+1. Some listings say 6+1. We will confirm against the unit and the manual before you buy.

Engraving

Dark Horse Guns & Ammo does laser engraving in-house, and walnut takes engraving beautifully. Worth saying plainly though: this is a limited-run collectible that already carries Tippmann's own engraved furniture, and personalizing it is a choice that can cut against resale value. Some people want their name on a piece like this and some want it exactly as it left Fort Wayne. Both answers are correct. Come talk it through and we will tell you honestly what we would do.
