Dark Clown is a genuine Magpul PMAG 30 AR/M4 GEN M3 in 5.56x45, laser engraved by hand at Dark Horse Guns & Ammo in Yerington, Nevada. No ink, no paint, no vinyl — the artwork is burned into the polymer itself, so it cannot chip, peel, or wear off.

What makes a laser engraved PMAG different

Most "custom" AR-15 magazines are printed, wrapped, or Cerakoted. Those are coatings sitting on top of the magazine, and coatings come off — against a mag pouch, a rifle rack, or the concrete at a range. A laser engraved magazine has no coating at all. The fiber laser heats the surface of Magpul's polymer until it darkens and lifts to a warm tan, which means the image is a permanent change in the material rather than a layer added to it.

Depth of the burn does the shading. On Dark Clown, that's what you see in the fine cross-hatching of the collar, the crackle across the face, and the hair that fades from solid tan to nothing as it rises toward the feed lips. The design runs edge to edge across the magazine's rib lines instead of avoiding them, so it reads as part of the mag rather than a sticker placed on one.

Fit and function

Nothing about the engraving changes how the magazine works. We mark the exterior face only — the feed lips, follower, spring, and floorplate are left exactly as Magpul built them, and the paint pen ID panel and dot matrix on the body stay legible so you can still number your mags. It loads, seats, and drops the way any GEN M3 PMAG does, and it takes a Magpul Ranger Plate or L-Plate without modification.

Expect small variation

Because the color comes from a reaction in the polymer rather than a pigment, tone shifts slightly from magazine to magazine and even across a single body. One may come out a touch lighter or warmer than the next. That is the process working correctly, not a flaw, and it is the reason no two Dark Clown mags are identical.

Care

  • Wipe down with a dry or lightly dampened cloth.
  • Solvents and CLP will not lift the engraving, but keep heavy solvent contact off the polymer generally.
  • No sealing, waxing, or touch-up needed. There is no finish to maintain.
  • Store loaded or unloaded — the GEN M3 spring is rated for it.
Before you order

This listing is for a magazine only — no firearm, no ammunition. Magazine capacity laws vary by state, county, and city. Check your local law before purchasing; we ship only where it is legal to do so and cannot advise on your jurisdiction.

Want your own mags engraved?

Laser engraving is one of three services at our Yerington shop, alongside gun cleaning and FFL transfers. Bring in your own PMAGs, receivers, knives, or metal gear and we will quote it at the counter. We confirm artwork and spelling with you before anything is marked.

Will the engraving wear off?

No. The image is burned into the polymer, not printed on it. There is no layer that can chip or peel.

Is this a real Magpul magazine?

Yes. Every Dark Clown mag starts as a genuine Magpul PMAG 30 AR/M4 GEN M3. We do not engrave clones or unbranded magazines.

Does engraving affect reliability?

No. Only the outer face of the body is marked. Feed lips, follower, spring, and floorplate are untouched.

What color is the engraving?

A warm tan that the black polymer turns naturally under the laser. It is not paint or dye, and no color options are available on this design.

Will it fit my rifle?

It fits AR-15 and M4 pattern rifles chambered in 5.56x45 or .223, and other firearms that accept STANAG 4179 magazines.
